Facebook Announces 100% Renewable Energy Plans

Today, Facebook announced a commitment to power its global operations with 100% renewables, as well as reduce its greenhouse-gas emissions 75%, by the end of 2020.

Since its first purchase of wind in 2013, according to a company update, Facebook has signed contracts totaling 3 GW of new solar and wind power, including 2.5 GW in the past 12 months alone. Facebook notes that the projects are “new and on the same grid as [its] data centers.”

“We bring an open and innovative approach to finding renewable energy solutions that fit our needs and can move energy markets forward,” the company says. “We do this by working to enable access to renewable energy resources for other companies and organizations by building infrastructure, opening projects to other buyers or establishing green tariffs, which allow customers to buy renewable energy from their local utilities.”

In 2017, Facebook reached its 50% renewable energy goal a year early. More on the company’s renewables initiatives can be found here.
